‘Beer is More Expensive Than Music’
ONE OF the seasoned musicians in Nigeria, General Pype, who is fighting tooth and nail to make African music felt on the international music scene, has declared that in his country, Nigeria Beer is more expensive than music.
He said radio stations in Nigeria patronise more of the foreign artistes’ albums including albums of those who have passed away, such as Bob Marley, and pay royalties to them.
He revealed that although they love music, radio stations in Nigeria don't buy their local albums and that Nigerian artistes only get paid when they have shows.
General noted “It is only in Nigeria that you have a bottle of beer being more expensive than an album. Nobody would buy an album for 200 Naira in traffic.
If an Ibo boy tells you it is 200 Naira, nobody would buy because they would say it is too much, but a bottle of beer costs between about N250 to N500.”
Having just missed being crowned winner of the much-desired Next Rated category of the Hip Hop World Awards, General is now a notable name in the industry. But he said it all did not start today for him, disclosing that he is happy he has been able to put dancehall on the front burner.
“I was excited about the nomination, but really the reason I am happy and feel so exhilarated is that I have been able to put dancehall on the list of genres in the industry because this is the first time that a real dancehall song, not Afro-dancehall, is being nominated in the Hip Hop World Awards for such an important category.”
Just before the awards ceremony was held, he said although awards are important, they don't mean that much to him.
General Pype is one artiste who is eternally grateful to 'Jah', the spirit of the Rastafarianism, for how far he has come but he says he is an everyday Nigerian and that the title of an exported artiste does not apply to him.
He also explained that patois is a veritable means of communication, as far as he is concerned.
