'Homosexualism Can Be Treated'

A medical practitioner at the 37 Military Hospital, Dr Kofi Nutakor, has described homosexualism as a mental disorder which can be treated.

Discounting the view that homosexualism is a human rights issue, Dr Nutakor equated that sexual preference with kleptomania and  pointed out that just as no civilised society would let kleptomaniacs free to exercise their uncontrollable impulse to steal, gays and lesbians ought to be counselled to overcome their condition.

Sharing his views with the Daily Graphic on the recent controversy over the upsurge in the activities of homosexuals in the country, Dr Nutakor said “there are techniques and methods to treat this disorder.”

He mentioned some of the most effective techniques as psychoanalysis and group therapy and indicated that the treatment had a better prognosis if the patient was highly motivated, under the age of 35 years, and had a history of heterosexual behaviour.

He said the critical age for character formation was between one-and-a half and three years (toddler) and added that it was at that age that children became aware of the anatomical differences between the sexes, and socialisation also began from there.

Dr Nutakor said during the fourth and the fifth years of the child, strong sexual feelings towards the opposite-sex parent was common.

“In normal development, if the parent who has the same sex as the child or the rival parent does not overreact and remains accommodating to the child, the child will accept the reality of his or her position in the family and develop normal healthy identification with the parent who has the same sex as his or hers”, he said.

He said the stereotypical family constellation associated with male homosexuality was the overly-close mother who devalued a distant or weak father.

Dr Nutakor said besides science, all religions; Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism, paganism and atheism had an aversion for this cruel practice.

Quoting a series of biblical passages to support his claims, he said “God abhors this nasty practice.”

He quoted Leviticus Chapter 18 verse 22: “No man is to have sexual relations with another man; God hates that.”

“Again in the book of Leviticus Chapter 20 verse 13, it is written, ‘If a man has sexual relations with another man, they have done a disgusting thing and both shall be put to death”, he said.

“Therefore, Christians who are talking about human rights must know that they must first be righteous before God,” he said.
