FA in race for Roy Hodgson

ENGLAND will have to move quickly if they want Roy Hodgson.

The Fulham boss is a target for Liverpool after Rafa Benitez's departure.

But the FA would like Hodgson to replace Fabio Capello if England are knocked out of the World Cup on Wednesday.

Yet with Liverpool ready to appoint the Craven Cottage chief when he returns from his BBC pundit's job in South Africa later this week, there is precious little time to waste.

The FA hope Capello will do "the honourable thing" and resign if we crash out at the group stage by failing to beat Slovenia.

But the Italian could dig his heels in, with two years still to run on his £6million-a-year deal.

Hodgson is known to fancy the England job and may turn down the Reds if there is a chance of him managing the Three Lions.

But Liverpool will want an answer and, if Capello gets through to the knockout phase, Hodgson is likely to end up at Anfield.

A Fulham source said: "Roy is very patriotic and has always wanted the England job.

"But he would never want to push Fabio out of the door."

Former Real Madrid coach Manuel Pellegrini is also in the running for the Kop job.

He told friends over the weekend that he was "heading for the Premier League" but refused to reveal to which club.

Pellegrini, 56, was axed by Real last month after just one year in charge.

Real finished second to Barcelona in La Liga and lost in the last 16 in the Champions League.
