Archbishop Desmond Tutu: I want to hug David Beckham

They're an unlikely pair but Archbishop Desmond Tutu has told David Beckham: ‘I could hug you.’

The England footballer made a surprise visit to the 78-year-old’s offices in Cape Town, ahead of England’s World Cup game against Algeria.

The cleric signed three ‘Tutu-4-1’ rucksacks for the footballer’s young children, Brooklyn, Romeo and Cruz.

Beckham, 35, was mobbed by women working in a call centre next door.

After witnessing the spectacle, Tutu said: ‘I could hug you for doing that. You can’t put a monetary value on the goodwill you’ve shown here today. The world is a better place for people like you.’

Beckham is a Unicef goodwill ambassador and vice-president of England’s bid to host the 2018 World Cup.
